Meet Ladysmith Black Mambazo

Many voices.
One unmistakable
sound.

A deep bass line. Harmonies that seem to breathe as one. Then a smile, a turn, a sudden burst of movement. A Mambazo concert is an invitation to share in the music.

For more than six decades, Ladysmith Black Mambazo have brought South African vocal traditions to audiences around the world. Their extraordinary precision is matched by warmth, humour and a stage presence that moves naturally between quiet concentration and exuberant dance.

Five GRAMMY Awards recognise a remarkable recording career. On stage, the connection is immediate: voices, stories and the joyful exchange between the singers and their audience.

Roots & continuity

A tradition
with a future.

At the heart of Mambazo’s sound is isicathamiya, the South African vocal tradition shaped by migrant workers who found companionship in song far from home.

Founded by Joseph Shabalala in the early 1960s, the group carries that tradition across generations. Younger singers bring their own energy to a shared musical language, while the message of peace, love and harmony remains central.

Their voices reached a vast new audience through Graceland in 1986. That encounter is one chapter in a much wider story — a story still being written.

The group, live

Hear the harmony.
Feel the movement.

Singing, dancing and the pleasure of a shared stage.

A concert begins with connection

Listen for the way a single voice emerges from the ensemble, and how the answer comes back. The detail is extraordinary; the welcome is open to everyone.

The cover is a supplied stage photograph. It is not a still from this recording.

Musical conversations

Always open
to another voice.

Two collaborations beyond the touring programme: a meeting with Jeremy Loops, and a South African conversation with Nduduzo Makhathini and Mbuso Khoza.
