The Mbira,
a Woman’s
Voice.

An instrument carried across generations.
Women who opened new possibilities.
An artist finding her own way forward.

Into the story
Black-and-white close-up of hands playing a mbira inside its resonator

01 · The instrument

A small instrument.
A vast resonance.

Metal keys. Interlocking patterns. A sound that seems to circle back and open out at the same time.

In Shona musical life, the mbira carries a profound spiritual and communal history. It connects music with memory, storytelling and the presence of ancestors. The concert stage is one setting in a much larger world.

Listen for the meeting of voice and repeating instrumental phrases: the way a melody settles into a pattern, then finds another route through it. This is music to enter, as well as music to hear.

02 · Women who opened the way

A living tradition.
More than one path.

Stella Chiweshe and Chiwoniso offer two illuminating points of reference for hearing women’s voices in Zimbabwean mbira music.

STELLA CHIWESHE

Opening the stage.

Stella Chiweshe began playing when the mbira was largely reserved for men. Rooted in the spiritual world of the mbira dzavadzimu, she brought its sound to international audiences and helped widen the space for women within the tradition.

CHIWONISO

Opening the song.

Chiwoniso placed the mbira at the heart of a contemporary songwriting voice. Her music connected Zimbabwean roots with soul and a forceful commitment to human rights and social justice. Rebel Woman remains an invitation into that world.

Their stories give context to Mary’s music. Each artist speaks in her own voice.

03 · Mary Anibal

The next chapter
has her own voice.

Mary’s music makes room for inheritance, curiosity and the life around her.

Her Afro-fusion draws folk traditions into a contemporary setting. Her work as an educator and advocate for women gives that musical approach a life beyond performance.

The connection with the artists before her is a useful way into the music. Then comes the pleasure of discovering Mary herself: her phrasing, her songs, her presence.

A closer listen

One voice.
A whole world.

Begin with Parafini. In this solo acoustic performance, the space between the voice and the instrument becomes part of the song. A moment to listen closely.
